During the first section of our PTV training, we will introduce you to recently developed PTV features that support activity-based demand modeling (ABM). The demand models themselves are specified and executed in ActivitySim, a popular open-source ABM framework from the U.S.

By embedding ActivitySim into a PTV Visum model, we avoid a closed-box approach and offer users an extensible solution. In the training you will get a chance to work through a small example.

While PTV Vissim is a comprehensive and widely used software for microscopic traffic flow simulation, there are occasionally studies that require the simulation of elements that are out of Vissim’s scope. Examples include the interaction between an ego vehicle (controlled by another simulator) and surrounding Vissim vehicles, the development and debugging of control algorithms for autonomous vehicles, VR applications, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) testing, and safety or emission optimization/testing. These studies call for a combination of PTV Vissim with other simulators covering the additional aspects. The training will demonstrate how such a co- simulation can be set up using PTV Vissim’s driving-simulator interface. The name indicates that the interface was originally conceived for connecting Vissim to driving simulator hardware used by a human (hardware-in-the-loop), but actually, the external component could equally well be another simulator. You will learn under which conditions such a setup works well and work through a small example.
